Out here a fence is measured in hundreds of feet.

Which changes what it should be made of, and changes what a straight line takes.

Why split rail wins on a big lot

Once a run gets long, the price per foot decides everything, and split rail is the cheapest fence that still looks like somebody meant it. Post spacing is wider because the rail length sets it, so the cost per hundred feet drops in a way board fence never does.

It also suits the land. A five acre lot fenced in six foot board stops being a five acre lot and starts being a compound. Two or three rail marks the line and leaves the property looking like itself.

If you need it to hold something, wire mesh goes on the inside face and disappears behind the rails at any distance. From the road it is still split rail. In the field it works.

Ground that fights back

Long runs out here cross things. Rock that stops an auger, a swale that holds water after rain, roots along an old treeline, and banks that fall away faster than a panel can rack. All of them change the post plan and none of them show up from the driveway.

So we walk the whole line before quoting, including the end nobody wants to walk to. One customer wrote that we did a great job considering some of the terrain obstacles over the 500 feet of fence installed. Finding those on the walk is the difference between a number that holds and one that moves.

Where the ground genuinely cannot take a post on line, we say so and show you the alternative rather than dogleg the fence and hope it reads as intentional.

Deer, livestock and what the fence has to stop

A fence out here is usually stopping something specific. Deer out of a garden or an orchard, a horse in a paddock, a dog off the road. Each one is a different height, a different rail count and a different bottom detail, and building the wrong one is worse than building nothing.

Deer are a height problem first. Four feet stops nothing, and a fence built short is money spent for no change in outcome. Livestock is a strength problem, which is about the rail to post connection and the bracing at corners and gates.

Tell us what the fence has to stop before we talk about what it looks like. The look is the easy part and it comes second.

I got multiple quotes, and he was the best priced as well. What I am most impressed with is that they put a screw hole in one of my posts backwards when installing a gate. Instead of just leaving the screw in, they removed the entire post and put a brand new one in. As a contractor myself I wish all of my crews would take a thought to quality like that.

If you're looking for high quality fencing, with superior craftsmanship, for a fair price, then look no further. I am an absolute perfectionist when building. These guys met every expectation and then some. They showed up on time, worked hard, cleaned up their work areas daily, and completed the job within my expectations.

Nick's Fencing was a lifesaver. They fixed a fence that had been installed incorrectly by another company, something many companies wouldn't even give us a quote to repair. Nick came out on a Sunday, was extremely responsive, professional, and truly went above and beyond to make sure everything was done correctly.

We had gotten five quotes from various fencing companies in the area and signed a quote with two of those companies who then did not show up or return our calls to install. Nick was installing a neighbor's fence so I asked him for a quote and he showed up within a few weeks and installed in basically one day. Fence looks great and quality is top-notch.

Nick and his crew made quick work of our old fence in just a few short hours. Within 2 short days later we had a fence to our liking and our very active German Shepherd Olive loves the new fence. All of his crew were very respectful and did great work. Pricing is very fair.

We were in a time crunch to pass homeowners insurance inspection. He graciously came out the next day to quote and his team fit us in within that first week. Without direction, they saved landscaped bushes and worked around them. I appreciated watching his team examine the fence slats to ensure there was no warping. His knowledge about pool fencing requirements was incredibly helpful.

Split rail, by a distance. The rail length sets the post spacing, so the cost per hundred feet drops in a way board fence never does.

Add wire mesh to the inside face carried down to grade and it will. On its own it will not, because the gaps are the point.

All of it, including the wet corner behind the treeline. Terrain is what moves a fence price, and finding it in week two is worse for both of us.

Ranch rail is what most horse property here uses. Corners, ends and gate assemblies get braced rather than being another post in the row.

Taller than most people expect. A deer clears four feet without effort, so a short fence is money spent for no change in outcome.

It is the next town up from our base. Normal working distance rather than a trip.
