Following a shoreline
A shoreline line is rarely straight and almost never level. It bends around a cove, it falls toward the water, and it often runs out into ground that is soft for part of the year. All three change how a fence gets set out.
Curves get taken as a series of short straight bays rather than forced. A fence that tries to bend looks bent. A fence made of short straight runs following a curve looks deliberate and lasts longer, because nothing is under tension it was not designed for.
Falling ground gets racked or stepped, and on a bank with a dog we close the triangles at the bottom of a stepped run rather than leaving them open. Nobody notices that detail until the dog does.
Wet ground and post life
Ground that stays damp is the hardest environment a wood post ever sees. Water sitting against the post at grade is what rots it, and a hole in heavy soil holds water like a bucket.
So on lots like these the hole goes deeper, the concrete gets crowned so water runs off rather than pooling, and the post gets left to cure properly before anything is hung on it. On the worst ground, aluminum on set posts avoids the problem instead of managing it.

What it looks like from the water
On a lake lot the fence has two audiences. The one in the house and the one going past in a boat. A tall solid line across the water side reads as a wall from out there, which is not what most people are going for.
Split rail and black aluminum both hold a line without closing the view in either direction. On deeper lots the useful pattern is privacy near the house where you actually sit, then something transparent as the lot runs down to the water.
