The part everybody can see
Six foot privacy board is the standard fence in most of Cabarrus County's newer neighborhoods, which means yours is compared to five others on the same street whether you want it to be or not. Style is not what separates them. A straight run, a true top line and posts that are actually plumb are.
That is a string line, a level and not rushing the post day. Everything after the posts is comparatively quick, and everything after the posts is also stuck with whatever the posts did.
A customer who builds for a living wrote that we removed an entire post and put a new one in because a screw hole had gone in backwards during a gate install, and said he wished his own crews thought about quality that way. That is the standard, and it is easier to hold on post day than to recover later.
Older Concord, and matching what is there
Closer to Union Street the housing is older, the lots are narrower and the fences are frequently replacements rather than first installs. That means an existing height, an existing line and often a neighbor with a view on both.
Matching an old fence means board width, picket spacing and rail height taken off what is there, not off a catalog. New wood is lighter than weathered wood and stays that way for a season or two, and we say so before we start.

Gates, and the mistake people regret
The most common thing we hear afterwards is that a gate should have been wider. Three feet is fine until a mower, a trailer or a machine needs to get into the back yard, and then it is a fence panel that has to come apart.
Past a certain width a single leaf sags no matter how it is built, so the honest answer is a double gate with a drop rod into a sleeve in the ground. It costs a little more on the day and nothing at all afterwards.
